Abs tract: S ince the 1990s, hundreds o f g round fissures have occurred in w estern H uozhou area o f Shanx i Prov ince
in Northern Ch ina. The fissures and related subsidence have dam aged to hou ses, ag ricultura l land, and groundw a-
ter resources. In th is paper, the tem po ral and spa tial distributions of the ground fracturesw ere investigated. The es-
sentia l facto rs of cracksw ere stud ied w ith the reg iona l geo logy, the geo log ica l circum stance, hydrogeo logy condition,
and hum an act iv ity. The results show that the m ine goaf and the fall o f groundw ater level are the essential facto rs,
and the precipitation acce lerates the developm en t o f the cracks. B ased on th is, corresponding prevention and con-
tro lm easures are presented.
