Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla 65401, M issouri, USA) Ab tract: The transformation of MgO # Al O based inclusions in alloy steel during refining has been studied by in- 2 3 dustrial trials. Besides Factsage software is used to study the formation and modification of spinel inclusions in alloy steel using calcium treatment during refining process. The results show that the transformation sequence of inclu- sions is: MgO# Al O y CaO-Al O-MgO complex inclusionsy MgO # Al O , and under present experimental con- 2 3 2 3 2 3 dition, in order to avoid forming MgO# Al O inclusions the content of dissolved Ca in the molten steel has to reach 2 3 - 6 1@ 10 . Also the results show that when more calcium was added to molten steel, the content of Al O and MgO 2 3
