Forests are the critical element to develop low － carbon economy ，and therefore low － carbon forestry development is the crucial way for China to achieve science － based development ，improve ecological civilization ，tackle climate change and solve “three － agricultural ”problems. The paper reviewed the theoretic basis and development path of low － carbon economic development ，analyzed the development status and trend of national and international low － carbon economy ，described important development opportunities for forestry sector in China and examined the major activities of Chinas forestry sector in response to climate change.
