[Key words]China, division of the social stratums, workers, self-respect and self-confident, social development Labour incidents in the spring and summer of 2010 reminds me of a hypothesis which has resulted from my investigations and research of Chinese workers’ status during the past 30-odd years. Despite immense complexities in the division of social strata in the post-reform period, the Chinese workers have emerged as the main body of society, and have displayed self-respect and self-confidence which have in turn produced positive implications for social development. I. Primitive value in cognition and behaviours of workers The cognition and behaviours of the workers concerned constitute an integral part of workers investigation. As compared with those of academics, their cognition and behaviours are of original value. In this sense, workers are not social factors that need to be pitied and sympathized, but positive social forces with dignity.
