Based on the current status of nature, economy and society, and in the light of interconnected atterns of material, energy and information flows, the Forest EcoNetw ork System in China ( CFENS) is to be established to harmo nizes the develo ment of human, nature and society in t his country, w hich is of integrit y, mult i function, high ef ficiency and o erability, and views the whole mainland as an ecosystem w ith different big arches consisting of dif ferent ty es of forests, grasslands, fields, barren hills and w astelands, waters, cities and villages. All arches are as individual ecological s ots; human activity, reci itation distribution and heat quantity are as three major lines; and the functional characteristics of ecosystems are as surfaces. CFENS is formed by the combination of s ots, lines and surfaces. The integral roles of forests should be maintained in a manner of safeguarding the longterm mult i func tions, mult i effects and multi directions, so that the water and soil loss, sandification and desertificat ion in China could be controlled and im roved, to decrease the damages from natural disasters of w indy sand, drought and wa terlogging, ty hoon and sea tide, to enhance the ca acity of territory security , to safeguard t he Chine
