The West Lake In heaven, there is paradise; on earth, its Suzhou and Hangzhou. This popular saying captures very well the charm of Hangzhou. Situated in Chinas eastern province of Zhejiang, Hangzhou was once described by the 13th century Italian traveler Marco Polo as the most splendid and luxurious city in the world. This is most evident in the West Lake area, the citys most prominent scenic spot. Impression West Lake is a modern day opera directed by internationally acclaimed filmmaker Zhang Yimou ,the visionary artist behind the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. The production is highlighted by music composed by the Japanese artist Kitaro. This pairing of East-meets-West is a rare combination of two artists at the peak of their creative talents.
