Tata Steel Europe Ltd., Swinden Technology Centre, Rotherham, UK) Abstract Weld solidification cracking, also known as hot cracking, is an important issue in welding of pipeline steel. If undetected, the cracking defects can act as stress concentration sites which lead to premature failure via fatigue, as well as offer favourable sites for hydrogen assisted cracking and stress corrosion cracking. Because of this, solidification cracks are considered the most deleterious of all welding defects. In this study weld solidification cracking in pipeline steel has been successfully observed in-situ for the first time using a high speed, high energy, synchrotron X-ray radioscopy approach. Analysis of the in-situ radiography sequence revealed the solidification cracking initiates in the weld sub-surface trailing the welding electrode. Pore like features are then observed in ex-situ 3D tomographic reconstructions of the cracking network, exclusive to the region of solidification crack initiation observed through in-situ radiography. These observations provide new insights into cracking initiation and growth during welding of pipeline steel.
