Chongq ing Research Cente r of State Key Laboratory of Coal Resources and Safe Mining, Chongqing 400042, China) Abstract: The sources and characteristics of tanning wastewater were introduced in this paper. Tanning wastewater with high concentration organic substances was colored, smelly and toxic. The wastewater was discharged discontinuously, unevenly. The water quality was quite different. The current situation of the technology and process of tanning effluent treatment in China was also introduced. The best tanning industry wastewater management program should include cleaner production, wastewater use and end-of-pipe treatment which was the most effective pollutant removal technology.
