Othello is unique among Shakespeare’s great tragedies. I. Feminism a. Definition of Feminism Feminism is a discourse that involves various movements， theories and philosophies that are concerned with the issue of gender difference， which advocate equality for women， and campaign for women’s rights and interests. In the late 1980s and 1990s postmodern feminists argued that gender roles are socially constructed and that it is impossible to generalize women’s experiences across cultures and histories. b. Feminism and Literary criticism Feminist criticism is a type of literary criticism， which may study and advocate the rights of women. As Judith Fetterley says， “Feminist criticism is a political act whose aim is not simply to interpret the world but to change it by changing the consciousness of those who read and their relation to what they read.” Using feminist criticism to analyze fiction may involve studying the repression of women in fiction. II. Othello as a Feminist Play a. The Symbols and Its Symbolism 1. The Handkerchief and Its Symbolism The handkerchief symbolizes different things to different characters. Since the handkerchief was the first gift Desdemona received from Othello， she keeps it about her constantly as a symbol of Othello’s love. Iago manipulates the handkerchief so that Othello comes to see it as a symbol of Desdemona’s faith and chastity.
