First a vectori- zation process is applied to decompose the image of a papercutting work into individual texture shapes, these textures are then categorized based on their shape similarities using an improved shape context descriptor, finally the spatial distribution mode of each categorized texture pattern is identified, therefore converting the initial pa- percutting image into a hierarchical tree structure composed of a primitive layer, a similarity elements layer, a decorative pattern layer and a root node.
