A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning ——John Donne(1572-1631) 15外13 丁一枫 Brief introduction of John Donne Background information Apprieciation of Valediction: Forbidding Mourning Analysis of the theme PART 1 Name:John Donne (1572~1631) Nation:England Hometown:London Main Achievements : Metaphysical Poetry(玄学派诗歌) Magnum Opus:《 Songs and Sonnets 》 Brief Introduction to his life Born in a Roman Catholic family. Received his education at Oxford and Cambridge. In 1601, he eloped with Ann More and was cast into prison by her father. In 1615, he gave up his Catholic faith and became an Anglican priest. In 1621, he was appointed the Dean of St. Pauls Cathedral by King James I. Background of The Poem John Donne wrote this poem for his wife upon living for France in 1611.This poem doesnt have much writing rhetoric, but just like his other love poems, its reasoning and debate of lyrical whim are abundant. Based on the theme of two lovers about to part for an extended time, the poem is notable for its use of conceits and ingenious analogies to describe the couples relationship. “A Valediction” is a 36-line love poem that was first published in the 1633 collection Songs and Sonnets, two years after Donnes death. Moving of th earth brings harms and fears ; Men reckon what it did, and meant ; But trepidation of the spheres, Though greater far, is innocent. If they be two, they are two so As stiff twin compasses are tw
