Key Laboratory of Geotechnical and Underground Engineering of Ministry of EducationTongji UniversityShanghai 200092China) Abstract A series of scaled model tests were conducted to study the influence of the net distance between adjacent pile caps and embankment fill properties on the soil arching effect of geosynthetic reinforced and pile supported embankment. The influences of fill cohesion and the distance of adjacent pile caps on soil arching effect and the variation with the surcharge on the top of embankment were analyzed. The results show that(1) Cohesion makes the soil arching effect strongersoil pressure on the pile caps becomes largerwhile soil pressure between pile caps becomes smaller. Comparing to fill without cohesionfor embankment constructed by fill with cohesion pile efficacy increasesthe settlements of subsoil between pile caps and on the surface of the embankment become smaller under the same load. (2) The arching conditions would be independent of fill cohesionthe height of soil arching is 1.01.5 times of the net distance of adjacent pile caps.
