Background information:
Students: 40 senior high school students, Grade 2
Lesson duration: 45 mins
Teaching objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1.improve?their?abilities?of?fast?reading by using?the?reading?skills:?skimming and scanning;
2. improve?their?abilities?of?fast?reaction,?judgment?and?imagination;
3. master?the?reading?strategies:?reading a newspaper article. Learn about the essential elements of a typical news story, such as lead, body and comment.
4. know something about the UFO and aliens;
5. learn to discover and to explore the unknown by collecting information from multiple sources and by personal practice.
Teaching contents:
Reading skills: skimming and scanning
Vocabulary: unexplained, puzzled, disappear, witness, assume, aboard, dismiss, possibility
Expressions: step up, receive great interest, see sb. doing, put on, get ready for, pull back, show up, call the police, sth. happen to sb., do research on…, make up, take charge of, there’s no hard evidence that…,
Language skills: reading, speaking
Teaching aids: PPT, blackboard, chalks, pictures
Teaching procedures:
Step 1. Pre-reading (10 mins )
teacher shows students some pictures about the UFO and the aliens.
teacher summarizes and introduces today’s topic “the unexplained”.
teacher asks students to complete the title, and to predict the contents of the text, then students give different understandings toward the title, teacher summarizes.
teacher introduces the reading strategy towards this article: how to read a newspaper article.
Step 2. While-reading (30 mins)
teacher asks students to skim the first paragraph to find out the supporting details as follows: who, what ,when, where and why did people show great interest.

(Key: a fifteen-year-old boy.)

(Key: He went missing.)
3. When did he go missing?
(Key: He went missing three days ago.)
