Since the 1920s, Regional Plan Association
has developed groundbreaking long-range
plans to guide the growth of the New York
metropolitan area.
These efforts have shaped and improved
the region’s economic health, environmental
sustainability and quality of life.
The Regional Plan of New York
and Its Environs defined the
region as 22 counties sharing
critical economic, transporta-
tion and open space systems.
Today, RPA describes the New
York metropolitan area as 31
counties in three states.
RPA and the Region
Since then, RPA has conceived,
researched, written and executed
two more comprehensive regional
plans for greater New York, in 1969
and 1996. In 2013, RPA began work
on a fourth regional plan.
Over the last nine decades, RPA
has been the most influential voice
in shaping the development of
the New York metropolitan region.
