The Technology of Burundi(By Cheng Xie)Burundi is a developing African country with agriculture as the main source of export earnings. It is one of the poorest countries on earth. The political and economic issues caused Burundians to live without most of the modern technologies, including electronics and manufacturing plants.Burundi is located in Central Africa, with geographic coordinates of 3° 30’ south, 30° 00’ east. As a noncoastal country, Burundi is surrounded by three other nations – Democratic Republic of the Congo, The United Republic of Tanzania and The Republic of Rwanda. Burundi has a total area of 27,830 square kilometres; which is consisting of 25,680 square kilometres of land mass, and 2,150 square kilometres of water. In comparison, Maryland (A US state situated in the Mid Atlantic region) is marginally larger. Burundi is relatively close to the equator, this results a tropical climate with moderate amount of rainfall (approximately 150 centimetres of rainfall annually). The terrain of Burundi is mainly hilly with drastic contrast in altitude. The range of the sea level varies from 772 metres to 2,679 metres. The capital city of Burundi is Bujumbura. The Burundi population is?approximately 10,216,190 (July 2011 census). This is comprised of 85 per cent of Hutu ethnic, 14 per cent of Tutsi, the remainder 1 per cent are Twa. The sex ratio of Burundi is 0.98 male per female. Only 59.3 per cent of Burundians are literate. Over 12 out of 25 of Burundians are unsuitable for work due to age limitations (under 15 or over 64 years of age). The low literacy level and generally young peer group caused industrialization relatively difficult in Burundi. The life expectancy of a Burundian is 59.24 years, ranking 190 in the world. Due to poor health care and low life expectancy, the median age of Burundi is 17.2 years old. Burundi is an agricultural nation with undeveloped industrial sector. Agriculture occupies 93.6 per cent of the total labour force in Burundi.
