It is emotive rather than informative since it is just for greeting each other. Greeting is the first step for communication and is what the communication is based on. No matter which language community is, greeting is an indispensible part of language. However, the means of presentation and usage of various languages differ sharply due to different cultures and customs. If we do not know the distinctions between them, we will inevitably cause misunderstandings between each other. Hence, this paper centers on the difference and similarities between Chinese and English greetings. Through contrast, we will be familiar with the difference between Chinese and English greetings through content, meaning, structure and appellation, which is of great help for us to use them freely and flexibly.
