Tempers of NHT’ed Alloys
• Temper: Condition of an alloy/product specified by requirements such as:
– Strength/hardness
– Elongation/ductility
– Corrosion resistance, etc.
• Temper depends on the manufacturing flow path as well as the final
properties
• Examples of NHT Product Tempers:
– Can Body Stock: 3104-H19
– Can End Stock: 5182-H48
– Lithographic Sheet: 1050-H18
– Sheet for computer parts: 5052-H32
– Railroad Car Sheet: 5454-H321
– Shipbuilding Plate: 5083-H116
– Household Foil: 8111-O
– Anodized Decorative Parts: 3003-H24

AA Temper Definitions
Heat Treatable Alloy: “T” - tempers
“An alloy which may be strengthened by a
suitable thermal treatment” 2xxx, 6xxx, 7xxx
are heat-treatable.
Non-Heat Treatable Alloy: “H” - tempers
“An alloy which can be strengthened only by
cold* work” 1xxx, 3xxx, 5xxx, and some 8xxx are
non-heat-treatable.
