There is also a study on the change and determination of the Chinese translation of “fax”through a statistic analysis of 225 papers in 128 modern Chinese journals. The results show that it is Zhigang who first used the Chinese term “Chuanzhen”to refer to the fax technology in 1868 in his Chu Shi Tai xi Ji ( An Account of the First Diplomatic Mission to the Great West) , and the Journal World of Science is the earliest modern Chinese journal to use it in 1930. It is concluded that the origin of the Chinese translation of “fax”is a kind of semantic borrowing from ancient Chinese and it represents the cultural self-consciousness of Chinese people in the cognition of new things. The determination of the Chinese nomenclature “Chuanzhen”is an important symbol of the spread of fax technology to China. Reviewing the origin and determination process of its Chinese translation provides an important basis for studying the introduction and spread of fax technology in China.
