Historically the ledger was a book where the accountant wrote the postings into. The main ledger of an accounting system is the general ledger. The general ledger (G/L) contains all accounts of the accounting system. All other ledgers are subsidiary ledgers (subledgers) of the general ledger. The SAP system contains: accounts payable, accounts receivable and asset accounting. The accounts contained in the subledgers are subsidiary accounts of G/L accounts. All postings to a certain subledger account are reflected on an certain G/L account which is called the reconciliation account of that subledger account. The purpose of a subledger is to structure the G/L postings and to offer additional functionality.
