Chapter 1 Introduction 1.1 Research Background College English Test (CET), born in January, 1989, is a large-scale standardized test in China, superintended by the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education in China. It is designed for non-English majors to measure their English proficiency, and is widely accepted by the test takers and test users. It is a test battery consisting of two tests, i.e., CET4 and CET6. The former is given to non-English majors at the end of first or second year at university, and the latter is taken when they step into the third or fourth year. CET is administered twice each year in June and December.
