Report on Central Hospital Kigali (CHUK)– Recovery Room Jan 2007 – Feb 2007 Objective: To assess the standards, resources support structures involved in the operation of the recovery room at CHUK – Rwanda, to develop recommendations for improvements based on this assessment, to identify potential areas for partnering with CASIEF volunteers. Location: Post Anesthetic Recovery Room – CHUK Rwanda Assessment Dates: Jan 15, 2007 – Feb. 2, 2007 Clinical Standards: Discharge criteria: There was general discharge criteria posted on the wall of the recovery room. Despite, these standards the discharge criteria were not met by the nursing staff. Patients were either discharged without meeting discharge criteria, without a complete assessment, without complete documentation, or a combination of the above. Obviously, if admission discharge criteria are adhered to it facilitates promotes patient safety. If allocated, a permanent in-charge nurse position with acute care experience could monitor admissions discharges implement their current standard of discharge criteria. In addition, CASIEF volunteers could assist by facilitating nursing education by mentoring nurses at the bedside to implement admission discharge criteria. Basic patient care nursing standards were drafted reviewed with Janviere (head nurse – anesthesia) with the intention to implement in recovery. Appendix I Patient Care Standards: I did not see evidence of clinical standards with respect to specific components of patient care. For example: Central line care, IV therapy standards, peripheral vascular limb assessment, care of the unconscious patient, burn care, care of patients with head injuries. Examples of standard nursing care plans for central lines, thoracotomy patients burn patients were given to the director of ICU.
