Departm ent of Civ ilEng ineering, H arbinU niversity of Technology, H arbin 50090, China) Abstract: Surface ruptures caused by strong earthquakes of Kocaeli and Ch-iCh,i and local continental tectonics, earthquake activity are introduced here. A generalmethod of source rupture progress is proposed based on amacro- scopical dynam ic system of discontinuous earth med ia and interfaces. For existent surface ruptures, 5 main types are classified by in-situ survey and in general sense, w hich are shear strain localization, tensional break, shear fragmentized belt, p lastic deformation zone, and liquefaction/ lateral movement d ivisions. And related methods of those k inds of geomaterial failure of onset and evolution are proposed based on stability of governing equationsw ith specified constitutive models.
