Real retail sales growth abated (1) Retail sales of commodities reached 4,389.2 billion Yuan, up nominally by 15.0% YOY in 1Q12; while the retail sales of the catering industry grew nominally by 13.3% YOY to reach 542.7 billion Yuan Among various commodities, sales of telecommunication equipment achieved the most impressive growth of 43.4% YOY in 1Q12. The growth of sales of home appliances and video equipment witnessed significant deceleration from 21.6% YOY in FY11 to 0.6% YOY in 1Q12. This was largely attributable to the cooling down of the housing market and the gradual withdrawal of government’s subsidy program for home appliances in the rural market. Real retail sales growth abated (2) Retail sales are primarily driven by urban population, which accounted for 86.6% of the total retail sales in 2011. Urban retail sales increased nominally by 14.9% YOY to 4,268.8 billion Yuan in 1Q12; rural retail sales rose by 14.6% YOY to 663.1 billion Yuan. Increased spending power of the urban households has been a positive driver for urban consumption. The per capita disposable income of urban households reached 21,810 Yuan in 2011, up by 14.1% YOY in nominal terms and was 2.8 percentage points higher than in 2010. The per capita net income of rural households amounted to 6,9
