Ref: MC 8/E MEDICAL COUNCIL OF HONG KONG Advice in regard to qualifications that are acceptable to the Council for use on signboards, letter-heads, visiting cards, etc. The Council wished to draw the attention of registered medical practitioners to section 5 (Professional communication and information dissemination) of the “Code of Professional Conduct” concerning the content of visiting cards, letter-heads, signboards etc., and to remind practitioners that such notifications should display only the minimum of information. Only those qualifications acceptable to the Council may be quoted. These should be shown in abbreviated form and show the place of origin in brackets. The first qualification shown must be the one entitling the holder to registration, e.g. M.B.B.S.(H.K.), followed by additional post-graduate qualifications when held, e.g. F.R.C.S. (Eng.), D.T.M. H. (Lond.). Name, address of surgery, telephone numbers and consulting hours may also be shown but additional information referring to special types of treatment, or inferring a specialty, should be avoided. Chinese translations should be particularly carefully worded and must follow the attached list of approved translations whatever these are provided. Advice on other qualifications including approved Chinese translations which may be used may be obtained by communicating, in writing, with the Secretary, Medical Council, but if in doubt practitioners would be wise to show only those qualifications entered against their names in the Register.
