The character of the mother Hester, the mother in the story’s household, is our first view into the stability of the family. Although she originally married for love, after her husband fails to make enough money to support the elegant lifestyle and put the family deep in debt this love is now gone. Her children are healthy, yet they remain a burden to her. In public, she is picture of maternal duty, but in private, her heart is empty and she knows that she “could not feel love.” Hester is disconnected from her husband as they are “isolate from each other” and their marriage “is a constant struggle for more money.” Pauls mother desires wealth and material possessions to the exclusion of more valuable items such as love and self-knowledge.
