Metaphysics 1:1 again, as a summary of the whole system of Confucian morality and metaphysics/ontology. Sung Ming Confucianism tries to explain how to combine Confucian morality and ontology together. Reply to Neo-Taoism and Chinese Buddhism PHIL 2931 Chinese Philosophy The Great Learning and The Doctrine of Mean Four Books The Analects, Mencius, The Great Learning and The Doctrine of Mean are considered as “four books” in Confucianism. They are the texts and the only texts for civil service examinations in China from 1313 to 1905! Supposedly, they represent the whole system of thought in Confucianism. The Great Learning and The Doctrine of Mean Both the Great Learning (Ta Hsueh 大學)and the Doctrine of Mean (Chung Yung 中庸) are actually two chapters of the Book of Rites (Li Chi 禮記). Traditional story says that they are written in classical period (Chou Dynasty) But they may actually be written (or at least the finalized version we have now) in Han Dynasty (especially the Doctrine of Mean) They were taken out from Chu Hsi 朱熹(1130-1200 AD) as two independent books later. The Great Learning and The Doctrine of Mean Both of them represent systematic summaries of Confucianism. The Great Learning is a summary of the Confucian educational, moral and political programs, and the Doctrine of Mean is a summary of Confucian morality to metaphysics. The Great Learning tells us how to act from the internal morality to the external politics. The Doctrine of Mean is about human and heaven. Read Chan Chapter 4 and 5; Fung Chapter 15 pp.172-177, Chapter 16 pp.181-183. Introductory from Chu Hsi My master, the philosopher Chang, says: The Great Learning is a Book transmitted by the Confucian School, and forms the gate by which the first learners enter into virtue. That we can now perceive the order in which the ancients pursued their learning is solely owing to the preservation of this work, the Analects and Mencius coming after it. Learners must commence their course with this
