In the preceding chapters we used examples and details, time order, space order, classification pattern, comparison contrast, cause effect pattern to develop paragraphs. Pre-writing of Essays Pre-writing process of essays involves 5 steps: title-writing, thesis-setting, essay-outlining, introduction conclusion writing. 1. Titling The functions of title: 1) to declare the topic of the whole essay; 2) arrest readers’ attention; 3) suggest a worth-while task to accomplish. 1. Title’s choice (the best titles do more, as the best essays do more) The worse is no title; A little better is a title that just declare the topic: Friendship, Sports, Noise in School, the like. The broad the topic, the worse the title: Science, Computer Science in China, Computer for China’s Education, Computer for Classroom Teaching in China. Which one is worse, better, best? The Forms of Title The popular form: descriptive, which tells us not the essay’s name but what of essay it is: A Review of Student’s Café. Another form: not only indicates the topic but also implies the thesis: The Joys of Basketball, Dream VS Reality, Examinations Exert a Harmful Influence on Education. Writing a Title If we shy away from the thesis in our title: 1) Question title: School Music: Fundamental or Terror? Man Woman: Equal or Not? 2) Why title: Why I hate Advertising, Why I Like Pop Music; 3) Declarative title: Breast-Feeding is Best, Childhood is Not the Best Time of Your Life. Continued 2.
