Tasks:
Pre-SWOT project:
#1. Preparation of mask files for selected reservoirs in USA
#2. Extracting NDVI data from MOD13Q1 for the selected reservoirs in USA
#3. Determining the threshold NDVI value for various reservoirs based on
the shape of the reservoir polygon
Progress:
• The preparation of mask files for various reservoirs within US has been done
• Based on the mask data and tile information, the NDVI data are being
extracted for individual reservoir within US. This task is still in progress
• To estimate the area extent of each reservoir, the threshold NDVI value was
determined for various global lakes and reservoirs. For example, the
selection of threshold values for Lake Mead (Hoover dam, USA) and Mar
Chiquita Lake (Argentina) were shown on the Fig. 1 and 2 below.
• The analysis showed that the threshold value of 0.1 gives better
representation of the actual reservoir/lake shapes particularly in the case of
small size water bodies.
• This result is consistent with the threshold used by Gao et al., 2012.
