Assignment 1 to the students who attend the Contract Documents for Construction 27 March 2012 Selection of method for procurement of works for New Office Building of the Department of Construction Management, Tsinghua University, Beijing Description of the assignment The department has found the existing office building unsuitable for its current daily operation and the near future development and it has initiated a renovation project to alter the single storey building to a three storey one. The proposed new building will be sited in the place and of 8,000 m2 to accommodate the 20 faculty members, 50 postgraduate students for master and/or doctor degree, 20 visiting scholars, 20 post-doctor researchers and 6 administrative employees. The new building will consist of offices, an exhibition hall, two computer laboratories, a library, three meeting room, a lecture theatre, a tea room and, of course, the toilets. The department has to finance the new building on its own. A preliminary estimate indicates that the proposed facility will cost the department RMB 10 million yuan. The fund now available to the department is RMB 10 million yuan and it has to raise the remaining RMB 5 million yuan to pay for the proposed new facility. It is preferable that the design documents be prepared by Tsinghua University Building Design and Research Institute subsidiary to Tsinghua University. However, the contractor must be selected on a competitive basis, according to the Tendering Law of the Peoples Republic of China. Obviously, the existing building must be demolished before the construction can proceed and its current occupants must be relocated somewhere else for the uninterruptible operations.
