Bronchodilators—open narrowed airways Mucolytic agents—liquefy or loosen thick secretions Corticosteroids—reduce inflammation in airways With inhaled corticosteroids, make sure that the patient rinses their mouth after use to decrease the risk of an oral fungal infection-yeast/candidiasis. Take a look at page 1373, Table 39-2 for a list of common medications for respiratory functioning, their side effects, and nursing implications. This is a good reference when you are looking up your patient’s medications. Again check to see if you or respiratory therapy is to administer the medications.
