The Use of Group Work in Intensive Reading Class 论精读课中小组活动的意义 Abstract: Group work, if conducted effectively, can bring positive effects on students’ learning. Therefore, knowing how to apply group work to intensive reading class is very important. This paper first makes a brief review of four advantages of group work. Then it presents a model of a successful intensive reading class with the use of group work. Finally it discusses the ways in which this model lesson has brought into play the advantages of group work, and it also gives some suggestions as to the successful group work management. Key words: group work, intensive reading class, active learning 摘要:合理的小组活动能够促进学生的学习,因此,了解如何有效地在精读课上应用小组活动来提高教学非常重要。本文首先回顾了小组活动的四点优点,然后通过一节英语精读课实例探讨如何在课上充分发挥小组活动的优势以及组织小组活动时应注意的问题。 关键词:小组活动, 精读课, 主动性学习 Introduction The traditional mode of classroom organization is a teacher-centered one, with students sitting in rows facing the teacher. In this kind of classroom, the teacher is the active agent, spending most of the time transmitting knowledge to the students, while the students are passive recipients, having few opportunities to take part in the class. Traditional teaching style puts emphasis on teacher’s instruction, which is regarded as a key to learning. However, in some classes, the teacher may have taught much but the students learn little. In intensive reading classes, it is found that a number of teachers still use the traditional teaching style that greatly inhibits students from developing their capacities in using the language. In order to cope with the disadvantages of this traditional teaching mode, many researchers and educators have advocated various teaching strategies. Group work, as a way of classroom organization, has been widely practiced in ESL classrooms. Research has found that group work, if conducted properly, can certainly promote students’ learning. This thesis is to study the value of using group work in intensive reading classrooms. 1. Literatur
