She is active strong-minded and never gives in to the fate. Eg. She encourages her lover to flee with her to Europe but in vain. After she wears the scarlet letter, she receives all the coldness and condemns quietly and never complains her position and blame. Crime——Rebel of puritan Her fault was that her passions, and her love, were stronger than her respect for the moral code. As she says: “What we did had a consecration of its own. We feel it so! We said so to each other!” Atonement——Compromise thearchy(神权) Atonement is a basic creed(教义) of protestant (Calvinism加尔文主义), and the main method is to help others. Hester won her much respect among those townspeople who once condemned her. If the face of her subsequent behavior, the public memory of her original sin has been dimmed, and the Letter A which originally stood for ‘Adultery’ is said by many to stand for Able’. About women’s right and freedom Many people think that Hester is a soldier of feminism, especially in the market-place. Eg. “Never had Hester Prynne appeared more ladylike than as she issued from the prison.” Eg. “The crowd of Puritans might have seen in this beautiful woman…an object to remind him of the image of Divine Maternity.(圣母)” About women’s right and freedom The letter is the symbol of the lover of Prynne, analyses Prynnes attitude towards the whole “crime” and her experience of going to America and leaving America and finally back to America, which shows her pursuit of the dream of American freedom, the liberation of human nature and returning to her spiritual homeland, and this course is her pursuit of meaning of life as well.
