Ezra Pound 1885-1972 Ezra Pound Ezra Pound was an American avant-garde poet, critic, and translator. He exerted an enormous influence on the development of English and American poetry and criticism in the early 20th century. Avant-garde is a French word used to describe people or works of art that are experimental and/or innovative. Literary Style and Influence Most of his works were influenced by earlier works. Pound sought ways to creatively integrated old with new. “Make it New!” Integrating themes from different cultures. Pound drew his themes from Confucian ethics, classical mythology, economic theory, and other seemingly disparate sources in his effort to interpret cultural history. Imagist and avant-garde poet Imagism Imagism was a literary movement launched by British and American poets early in the 20th century that advocated the use of free verse, clear concrete images and common speech patterns. It derived its technique from Chinese and Japanese poetry which stresses clarity, precision and economy of words. “In a Station of the Metro” The Cantos of Ezra Pound Portions of Pounds major work, Cantos, were first published in 1925; the first complete English edition of all the published segments was issued in 1970 as The Cantos of Ezra Pound. The Cantos by Ezra Pound is a long, incomplete poem in 120 sections, each of which is a canto. Most of it was written between 1915 and 1962. The most striking feature of the text is the inclusion of Chinese characters as well as quotations in European languages other than English. Death In 1924 Pound settled in Rapallo, Italy and supported Mussolini. During World War II (1939-1945) he broadcast Fascist propaganda from Rome to the United States. He was arrested by the Americans in 1945, declared psychologically unfit to stand trial for treason, and confined to a mental hospital in Washington, D.C.
