In August of that year,an article appeared in the New York Sun with the following headline:GREAT ASTRONOMICAL DISCOVERIES MADE BY SIR JOHN HER—SCHEL(FROM THE EDINBURGH JOURN AL OF SCIENCE)The Sun reported that Herschel had discovered life on the moon,his telescope being so powerful that he could observe the Moon’s surface“as if he were standing on it”. More articles followed,with news that Herschel had been able to see the Moon’s craters,rivers,vegetation and animals—creatures that bore a strong resemblance to antelopes,goats and pelicans on the Earth.In the final installment,it was revealed that Herschel had actually seen a race of furry,winged men and women,human—like crea—tures who could fly! The Sun’s illustrators provided graphic images based on Herschel’s“descriptions”。 The story caused a sensation in America,and were soon syndicated(供许多报纸同时发表)to newspapers all over the world.Scientists were skeptical about the information, but it seems that no one pointed out that the Edinburgh Journal of Science didn’t actually exist.There had been a magazine with that name but it had closed down more than ten years before. The Sun articles were, of course, an elaborate hoas(骗局). Herschel had not really observed life on the Moon, nor had he made any of the other astronomical discoveries that the article reported. In fact, Herschel did not even know about the articles until he returned to England some time later. He had nothing to do with the stories at all. The Sun never admitted that the stories were fake.However,a few weeks after the publication,the editor wrote:“We can only concede(
