The Beautiful East Lake East Lake, located on the south bank of the Yangtze River and the east of Wuchang, is one of the major tourist attractions in Wuhan and the biggest lake in city within China. The lake covers an area of 33 square kilometers. Among all kinds of flowers, plum, lotus, and cassia [(k(si(] are of great reputation. Therefore, China’s Plum Research Center and Lotus Research Center have been set up here. Moshan Botanical Garden is well-known for its Plum Garden. Plum Garden lies in the south of Moshan Hill, it covers an area of 21 hectares [(hekta:]with a collection of 139 species, it has become one of the four major plum appreciation center in China. Before 1949, it was sparsely populated and had a very small area. In 1950, considering that Wuhan residents need a place to rest and tour, the Military and Civil Committee of Central China decided to establish the East Lake Scenic Spot Construction Committee and began to plan to construct East Lake. In 1954, when Zhu De visited East Lake, ha sang high praise to the good environment of East Lake. In addition, he wrote a poem with pleasure. Two lines of it were “East Lake lets West Lake better than itself temporarily, it will surpass West Lake in the future”. Within 50 years’ development, the area of the lake has been enlarged to about 33 square kilometers, being six times larger than West Lake in Hangzhou.
