Cachon Chapter 5Batching and other flow interruptions setup times and the economic order quantity method Example: batch size It takes one minute to produce one steer support unit (of which there is one per product) It takes 60 minutes to change over the milling machines from producing steer supports to producing ribs (setup time) It takes 0.5 minute to produce one rib, since there are two ribs in a product, this translates to one minute/unit Finally, it takes another 60 minutes to change over the milling machines back to producing steer supports. Calculate capacity Cachon Chapter 5, page 200, Table 5.1 CAPACITY-FLOW TIME FOR A BATCH PROCESS Consider the following batch flow process consisting of three process steps performed by three machines: CAPACITY-FLOW TIME FOR A BATCH PROCESS (Cont’d.) Using the current production batch size of 50 parts, how long would it take to produce 20 parts starting with an empty system? Assume that the units in the batch have to stay together (no smaller transfer batches allowed) when transferred to step 2 and to step 3. A unit can leave the system the moment it is completed at step 3. If the units in the batch have to stay together, by (a) it takes 70+100 + 1.5x 20 = 200 minutes for 20 parts to leave the system Using the current production batch size of 50 parts, how long would it take to produce 20 parts starting with an empty system? Assume that the units in the batch do not have to stay together, specifically, that units are transferred to the next step the moment they are completed at any step. If the units in the batch do not have to stay together, starting with an empty system, it takes the first unit (20 + 1 + 2 + 1.5) = 24.5 minutes to leave the system. It takes 2 more minutes to produce the second units, because you can schedule tasks on non-bottleneck steps parallel. As you can see in the following graph, it always takes 2 minutes more to produce one more unit after the first unit. Therefore, it takes altogether 24.5
