Abstract
Estuaries can be subdivided into three regimes: wave dominated, tidal
dominated and river dominated. This study investigates the morphological changes of
the Tamsui River estuary whose changes are dominated by river-induced processes.
This study aims to understand the short-term morphological fluctuations of the
Tamsui Estuary. A detailed tacheometric survey was used to measure the surface
relief for the construction of digital terrain models (DTMs) of the Watsuwei research
site before and after Typhoon Sinlaku which took place in 2002. This event caused
severe erosion and deposition in the study area.
This study demonstrates how monsoons, with their reciprocal predominant wind
directions have accelerated the recovery of the eroded areas by replenishing the
sediment lost during Typhoon Sinlaku.
