Introduction of Sentences In grammar, tense is a category that locates a situation in time, to indicate when the situation takes place, and tense structures are mentioned here to refer to the different verb forms in relative tenses. In English, any of the forms of a verb may be used to indicate the time of the action or state expressed by the varieties of a predicate verb, which is called verb tense. Generally speaking, there are four tense forms in English. They are indefinite form, continuous form, perfect form and continuous perfect form; at the same time, every tense form can be applied in the present tense, the past tense, the future tense and the past future tense. Therefore, there are totally 16 tenses, and among which, the following eight are commonly used: the simple present tense, the present continuous tense, the present perfect tense, the simple past tense, the past continuous tense, the past perfect tense, the simple future tense and the simple past future tense. 2. Types of tenses 一般现在时 一般过去时 现在进行时 过去进行时 现在完成时 过去完成时 一般将来时 过去将来时 3. Examples 3.1一般现在时 The shop opens at nine every day. The sun rises in the east. I declare Mr. Schiff elected. The plane takes off at 4 p. m.. I will tell her about it as soon as I see her. What can/could he mean? May/Might I come and see you? 3.2 一般过去时 I had a word with Julia this morning. Mrs. Peter always carried an umbrella. The boy opened his eyes for a moment，looked at the captain, and then died. He used to drink alcohol. Most often we would find him lying on a couch, reading.
