Now, this shows the flexibility of the MARC record structure. We have two publishers and two places of publication. We need to make it clear which publisher is in which place. Both subfields a and b are repeatable. The cataloger records the first place listed using subfield a, followed by the first publisher in subfield b. The publisher is preceded by a space-colon-space. Then we have the place of the second publisher, recorded in a new subfield a. It is preceded by a space-semicolon-space. Then the place of the second publisher is followed by the second publisher, recorded in a new subfield b. Again, the publisher is preceded by a space-semicolon-space. The punctuation tells us the relationship between place and publisher. And because both publishers are recorded in b subfields, the computer knows where to look for the publishers when it creates a publishers’ index. In this case we have one entity publishing the work for another entity. In this case, we record the publication statement as it appears in order to make the relationship clear. Notice that the cataloger recorded the statement the way it appeared on the title page, except that the word “by” was necessary grammatically and so added. The square brackets indicate that “by” did not appear on the title page. In some cases a work is published by one firm and distributed by another. In that case we have the option to record the distributor. Here the cataloger decided to add the distributor.
