North Atlantic Treaty Organization North Atlantic Treaty Organization is an association established on the agreement signed in 1949 by Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, UK, and USA. Now it has increased to nineteen member states. The organization was set up to provide collective defense of the major West Europe and North American states against the threat from the USSR. After the disintegration of the USSR in 1991, the North Atlantic Treaty Cooperation Council was established, including all the former Soviet republics. * Unit Nine 2. Foreign and Commonwealth Office Foreign and Commonwealth Office is a department in the British government which is responsible for the foreign affairs of the UK and the Commonwealth of Nations. The “office” is the older term, and then most of the “offices” were changed to “ministries” in the British government. Now most of the “ministries” have changed to “departments”, but still there are a few “offices”. 3. Rapid Reaction Corps Rapid Reaction Corps is a military force which was established by the NATO to meet the emergency. The British troops dominated the corps, which they are proud of. Nowadays many countries have established such troops in order to deal with terrorists and emergencies. * Unit Nine 4. Gamal Nasser: Gamal Nasser is the Egyptian army officer and statesman, who was born in 1918 and died in 1970. He and Neguib led the military coup and overthrew the monarchy. He was Prime Minister from 1954 to 1956 and he nationalized the Suez Canal in 1956. He was President of the United Arab Republic from 1958 to 1970. 5. the Suez Canal The Suez Canal is a shipping canal connecting the Mediterranean at Port Said with the Red Sea. The canal provides the shortest route for sea traffic between Europe and Asia. It was built between 1859 and 1869 by Ferdinand de Lesseps with the French and Egyptian capital, but Britain bought a major interest in th
