1. Exploration of speech acts桰nvitation
期“Invitation” which occurs frequently during our daily lives is one of the common speech acts. Giving or receiving invitation helps us strengthen the relationships with others and make our society more harmony. According to the theory, speech acts which are the actions performed via utterances are generally the representations of the speakers’ intentions. (Yule: 2000, 47) “Invitation” are the hopes or wishes that are given by the speakers and making the listeners to performing. Here we will have detail comparations on the two “invitation” text excerpts of inviting and accepting invitations.
1.1 Similarities between the two excerpts
Different contexts of culture will have different social conventions. When we are in some new places, we have to do things by the local conventions. There are some similarities about the two excerpts. Firstly, the texts both tell us to make sure the details of the invitations. They conclude the time, place, activities, and food and so on. Though the writer expressed indirectly, the readers should understand they need make good preparations for the party. They need wear the suitable clothes and fix the time on arriving to the party. Besides, they should also tell their demands to the hosts. The guests should show their respects to the hosts. Secondly, the texts both tell us to use affirmative words on the reply. Once the readers decide to go to the party, they should reply the hosts without the writing like “will be”. These commissives actually are like making promises to the hosts. Thir
