Competition or Co-operation(1999年) As is known to all, competition is found everywhere in the present-day society: competition in sports games, competition in business world, and peer competition in school. Although competition provides impetus for the development of both individuals and the society, the importance of the other side of the coin, cooperation, should never be underestimated in the course of both individuals and nations exploration for success. Especially in the context of industrial and economic globalization, every member of the global village needs to cooperate with each other so as to efficiently solve various problems arising in every corner of the world. The chief reason why cooperation should be stressed is that people are facing some pressing problems or even disasters that could not be solved without cooperative international efforts nowadays. After all, two heads are better than one. Today, with survival at stake, all nations must take the initiative at once to restrict harmful emissions which destroy ozone and result in global warming, to reduce the large-scale consumption of the finite natural resources on the earth, to prevent the overspread of devastating diseases such as AIDS and SARS before they become global epidemics, and to fight against the ferocious and rampant terrorism and crimes. Without effective international cooperation, we would easily get into deep water and risk self-destruction. In consequence, global peace, economic stability, and survival of the human species provide powerful reasons for developing the paradigm that stresses not only competition but also cooperation. A second compelling reason for arousing peoples awareness of the importance of cooperation lies in the fact that cooperation is concomitant with competition: competition exists for better cooperation and cooperation involves competition.
