Be familiar with the English root will be quite useful in remembering the words. Besides, vocabulary is the biggest obstacle of our English study, the English word-formation can help us remember and understand the words correctly, and enlarge our vocabulary in a short time, it is an effective and easy way for our English study. The English word formations are made up of affixation, compounding, conversion, blending, clipping, acronyms, back-formation. However, the affixation is claimed to be the most efficient way among them. Key words: Word root, English lexicology, word formation, affixation I. Introduction As a student of college of foreign language, I have learnt English for about 12 years. I have met with so many difficulties, such as ‘How to memorize words?’ 慦hy cane’t I remember the words?’ ‘Which is the most efficient way to recognize the words quickly?’ I have been thinking and trying to figure them out, but it seems no available means could do any help. Cramming plays an important role in words learning. As is known to everyone, if your vocabulary is limited your chances of success are limited, especially for those who are English major. II. Classifications of English-formation 1. Compounding 1) Definition ? Compounding is a process of word formation by which two or more stems are put together to make one word. The word formed in this way is called a compound?? 2) Characteristics of compounds (1)Phonetic feature ? The word stress of a compound usually falls on the first element, while in a free phrase, the second element is usually stressed.
