Both world urban population and Chinese urban population reached 50% since 2010. The most significant challenge will be accommodating the 350 million new urban residents expected to migrate to cities in the coming 20 years. This puts enormous pressures on transportation systems, housing stock, and infrastructure such as energy, waste, and water, which directly influences the carbon emissions. As the long emergency ahead of us, urgent questions remain: How will our cities survive? How can we combat and reconcile urban growth with sustainable use of resources for future generations to thrive? The word sustainability is derived from the Latin sustinere (tenere, to hold; sub, up). Sustain can mean “maintain”, “support”, or “endure”.
