Lecture 3 Education Education Reforms in UK Before 1870: Schools were set up by churches, with children from upper-class and middle-class families attending. After 1870: Government took responsibility for education -- industrial revolution and movement for social political reform The 1944 Act (England Wales): free secondary education for all children The tripartite(into 3 parts) system: At end of primary education children are selected by means of streaming. Those on the top stream (20%) went to ①grammar schools. National tests(Standard Accessment Tests--SATs) at 7,11,14 yrs old National Curriculum subjects English, Mathematics Science, Design and Technology – containing craft and design, food technology ICT- Information and communications technology History Geography Art and design Music Physical Education Key Stages 11+ General National Vocational Qualification General Certificate of Secondary Education Prince William in Eton He studied 3 A-levels in History of Art, Geography and Biology after passing the 10 GCSEs: 3 A*s in French, Latin and Biology 5 As in English, English Literature, Grography, History and Spanish 2 Bs in Maths and Additional French
