Windows XP Embedded will be a key player in the retail space. POS devices will utilize the rich networking, security, management, and other capabilities. Industrial Automation is an area where Windows NT Embedded 4.0 is already successful based primarily on the robust NT Kernel, networking, and integration capabilities. With all the rich new features that Windows XP Embedded provides, we expect it do become even more popular in this segment. The same holds true for Office Automation equipment, such as high end printers and copiers. It will also power a range of network devices, including those providing Voice over IP, routing, etc. Gaming will be a natural fit due to the rich multimedia like DX8, and networking capabilities. In addition, devices such as the one pictured here depend on the reliability and security that it provides, as well as integration into the backend infrastructure. These same reasons will make it a natural fit for all kinds of Kiosks and ATMs. Thin clients are a very natural fit for Windows XP Embedded. Thin clients can range from Windows-based Terminal in an enterprise environment, to clients deployed in hotel rooms and all sorts of other scenarios that require varying degrees of OS features and services. XP Embedded provides the foundation to enable all these clients, from rich multimedia, to various options for networking and security, to full Win32 compatibility, etc. Set-Top-boxes and Gateways are good examples of a new generation of device that will be enabled by Windows XP Embedded. One of the key reasons is that XP Embedded provides the foundation for OEMs to easily build value add services on top of that enable new revenue streams.
