Historical Remarks on Past Model Collections of Machines and Mechanismsin in Europe H. Kerle1 K. Mauersberger2 M. Ceccarelli3 Technical University Technical University University of Cassino Braunschweig, Germany Dresden, Germany Cassino, Italy Abstract: Strongly related to a technical historical interest can be considered the renewed attention to the collections of past models for mechanisms or scaled machinery, not only for museum exhibitions but even for technical teaching and investigation purposes. Teachers of machinery have often supported the teaching of mechanism design and operation by showing scaled models of mechanisms to their engineering students. Those models were often in the offices of the teaching staff in universities, but gradually in the course of the Industrial Revolution models were also built for the market by specialized companies, both for teaching yet and as demonstrators of advanced solutions. This paper gives an overview of the most important model collections in Europe at that time and the current status of preservation and use. Keywords: History of MMS, Kinematic models, Model collections, Model designers I. Introduction In the 17th century models in engineering disciplines, like civil, military, mining and mechanical engineering, were used more and more to inform various people of the nature of available constructions, machines, and devices for a wide variety of technical tasks. At the end of 17th century the construction and display of models were even standardized to some extent, and model collections of machines and mechanisms were established in many European cities where a solid basis of engineering knowledge had been grown up and developed by a scientific community and had been supported by the noble rulers.
