Sample Topic: How do you feel about academic writing? Name 3 specific reasons for why you feel that way. Sample response: While it may make me a nerd, I have always really enjoyed writing in an academic setting. One of the assignments that first hooked my into writing was in Mr. Dalton’s class at West Middle School. We had to write a paragraph describing an object without saying what it actually was. I wrote about a lemon and spent hours diving into the specific details of the lemon, painting a picture with my words. In high school, while I sometimes struggled with analytical writing, I had teachers who helped me learn how to pick a text apart to see what was going on underneath the surface meaning. This allowed me to see that there is so much more to literature than what we first suspect and I love a good mystery. Finally, in college I really got involved in writing analysis pieces about a variety of topics while still getting to have fun with writing about my own experiences. I took classes like Intro to Women’s Literature and Shakespeare that made me truly fall in love with writing and language. So even though you might think I’m a little less cool now, I’m ok with that because writing is a part of who I am.
