From August to September in 2009, tadpoles were collected from Green Island (brackish water) and Taiping (freshwater) and then assigned to different salinities. We recorded tadpole daily survivorship until metamorphosis. At stages 35-38 tadpoles attained, we 1) drained blood from direct heart puncture for obtaining the plasma used to measure ions (Na , Cl , K ), ammonium, urea, and corticosterone; 2) excised gills from tadpoles for measuring Na , K -ATPasea and HSP70 expression; 3) collected whole body for osmolality measurement an
