Abstract
Historical thinking is crucial to learning history well and it is a kind of necessary ability in daily life. However compared with American history education, historical thinking has not been given adequate attention in Chinese high school history education. In this sense, China can learn some experiences from America to improve the status quo. This paper adopts literature study and comparative study to analyze the gap between China and America in developing of historical thinking.
Firstly, it revolves around three main aspects: teaching goal, course establishment and teaching method. As to the teaching goal, American curriculum standards have the clear explanation on historical thinking and specific requirement in different level. As to the course establishment, American high school implements the credit system. History holds the core position in social science in America. As to the teaching methods, American high school takes the exploratory teaching pattern emphasizing the training process and independent thinking. For accuracy, although in China historical thinking is gaining some attention with curriculum reform, unfortunately without concrete plan. China implements the credit system. The main teaching method of China is expository teaching pattern that the communication between teacher and student should be increased widely and deeply. Secondly, through the comparison, the gap on the development of historical thinking can be obviously seen: the focuses are more on cultivating historical thinking; various teaching methods; capacity-oriented examination system.
